What have you learnt from your audience feedback? (Evaluation question #3)
Audience feedback is vital in the production of films. They determine wether or not the film will be successful. In order for a film to gain a profit producers have to ensure that they attract the target audience. Thanks to audience feedback distributors can get another opinion besides their own, meaning that ultimately everyone`s ideas can be put together to make a better end product. Film distributors need to make sure that they target the right demographic audience.
Women In Black is recorded as the most successful British horror movie this is mostly because of their fantastic audience research prior to production. Daniel Radcliffe himself was the main person doing a multiple number of interviews. This would attract many Daniel Radcliffe fans obviously from his Harry Potter series. Thanks to this many teenagers went to watch the movie widening their audience. Before production we watched many horror trailers to gain ideas and inspirations.
When our first draft was completed we recorded the class giving us both a positive and negative comment on our production this was put on you tube so we could refer back to it and make changes based on their criticism. Another method to gain audience feedback was through a online survey site called `Survey Monkey` survey monkey allowed me to send out a ten questions to anyone I wanted. Questions included a persons age and their time spent at a cinema per month etc. We sent the surveys to mostly people mostly our age with some exceptions this was done because the age we wanted to appeal to was 18-21 year olds, however we also sent the survey to people over the age of 21 this is because it was important for us to gain feedback from people who possibly don’t consider going to watch a horror film to see what is essentially stopping them and then applying these things in our film.
Overall we received a mix of positive and constructive criticism. A common piece of criticism is that the music is too loud and that the storyline is unclear. Upon receiving this we went to work improving our trailer we did this by levelling out the music by making it less high pitched and also we added a range of extra clips to try make the storyline clearer. The feedback did contain positives many people said they liked the general idea of the trailer as the story is inventive also people said that the camera angles we used were effective and similar to other successful horror trailers. For my individual film poster I sent out a questionnaire to a number of people. I made sure that the people I sent it to ranged in age.
From my results I found that many people criticised the main image I used as it apparently didn’t come across as a killer. People also said that my background lacked anything interesting and wouldn’t encourage them to buy the magazine. However I did receive positive comments for instance many people said that they liked the effect I used on the X in the title. Upon this feedback I changed my main image to a emotionless boy wearing a hoodie as I felt that came across as more of a killer.
For my individual magazine cover I used practically the same questions. Many people actually left positive comments which meant I had not much feedback to improve on the only two criticisms I got was to change the main image and the background so this is exactly what I did. I changed the main cover image to that of the main character from the film as famous actors are used as the selling point for most films. Also I changed the background to a lime green colour so that it stands out on the shelf in retailers.

How effective is the combination of your product and ancillary texts? (Evaluation question #2)
- Film distributors ensures that everyone is aware of an upcoming film they do this through marketing. They are responsible for physically distributing the product around the world, because of this they are also responsible for supplying other countries with subtitles etc. A film distributor will usually look to advertise through magazines, radio and the television as they are the highest consumed media and therefore more people will see the product.
- Marketing tends to be based on the demographic of the target audience for instance if the film is targeting 18 to 21 year olds its unlikely the distributor will advertise the product on a children TV channel
- On certain movie posters the targeted audience is clear for example in the poster below it quotes `sharing is caring` a term typically used when talking to children. However the poster also quotes `Enough genuinely terrifying moments to rival a weekend with your in laws` This would relate to 16 - 21 year olds as at that age you start getting serious boyfriends/girlfriends and meeting your in laws is considered a genuinely terrifying thing for some. Film distributors will mix the two age audiences together even though the film is obviously targeted at a older audience this adds to the creepiness in a way as it makes the film see innocent and child friendly whereas in reality everyone knows it isn't.
A unified identity is important for distributors as they need to make the film believable as the film cant have a scary trailer but then a friendly pink movie poster. Consistency is vital.
- As is evident in the woman in black trailer and movie poster both are dark and mysterious.
