Narrative theory in relation to Halloween (Carepenter 1978) & The Crazies (Breck Eisner 2010)

Todorov:

Believed in the classic hollywood narrative (CHN) essentially there is normality then disruption and finally the closure. This can also be worded as equilibrum then disequilebrum and finally a resolution leading to a new equilibrum.

Todorov`s theory doesn`t follow halloweens narrative as right at the start there is disequilibrum when micheal stabs his sister. This strangely then leads to equilibrum until the narrative moves on a few years and micheal escapes. When this happens disequilibrum resumes and Micheal begins killing people. When Micheal falls off the balcony and escapes normallity presumedly resumes.

Propp:

Propp`s theory is that there are 8 main character roles that are included in a narrative storyline...1. The villains (the baddie) 2. The hero (our main protagonist and victor) 3.The donor (who provides some object with a magic property) 4. The helper (who aids the hero) 5. The princess (the sought for person) `reward' for the hero and objects of villian`s schemes. 6. Her father who rewards the hero. 7. The dispatcher who sends the hero on his way. 8. The false hero (the double agent who hinders the hero rather than help them.

Some of these 8 character types can be linked to halloween. For example the villain is obviously Micheal Myers. The hero is Laurie. In some ways the helper and donor are both doctor Lumis as he shoots micheal and also provides the officer with vital information. The other 4 dont particularly fit the roles in Halloween.

Levi-Strauss:

Strauss`s theory revolved around the idea of binary opposites for example heroes and villians.
The idea that a hero is so good he/she makes the villian look worse and vise versa.

This is present in Halloween as we see Laurie as a sensible school student who seems to be work obsessed in comparrison to Micheal who is a sensless killer.

Bordwell and Thompson

Their theory revolved around cause and effect in space and time. For example flashbacks are used to tell or show more. In Halloween in the opening clip we see a flashback of how Micheal kills his sister without this we wouldn't be able to understand the true evil behind Micheal`s character during the film.

The Crazies

1. Does The Crazies follow the `CHN` why or why not? ...
No because the first clip we see is of a ruined town which isnt exactly the ideal image of peace.

2. How many of Propp`s character types can be identified in the film?...
The hero is obviously David the helper appears to be Russel. The princess is Judy the bad guy is arguably the U.S army

3. List three examples of binary opposistions in the film and explain them briefly...
Some examples of binary opposites are David the local sherif and Rory the man with the shotgun one obviously presents the good of the law while the other the bad.

Another opposite is Judy and Becca. Judy is a responsible doctor while Becca just wants to go out and party.

Another opposite is arguably Russel and David towards the end Rusell tries to kill David and Judy making him the utmost evil

4. Identify the three `durations` and give an estimate of the time each duration covers.
The first duration is from when Rory is killed to when his body is being examined we can presume this runs the course of atleast a day.

Another duration is the time between Judy being taken away and David turning up to save her its likely this happened over the course of a few hours.

The final duration is the time between Rusell`s well being and the adaptation of his ilness which took roughly two days.

5. Give two examples of events that cause later events in the film but which occur before the film starts
Two examples of later events would be the pregnancy of Judy which eventually gets her taken away.

Another example is the plane crash which contaminates the water.

6. List two events from the 92 minute film

Russel`s death
Rory`s death
